Maharashtra just gave the green light to something that sounds like science fiction—but it’s happening right here. India’s first pod taxi network is coming to connect Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the groundbreaking ceremony will take place within six months. Here’s everything you need to know about this futuristic transport project.

What Exactly Is a Pod Taxi?
A pod taxi is a small, fully automated electric vehicle with no driver inside. These driverless cars run on elevated tracks high above the streets, kind of like a miniature train system. Instead of stopping in traffic, the pods stay separate from road traffic completely. Each pod carries 4 to 8 passengers and travels at speeds up to 40 kilometers per hour.
Think of it as combining the best parts of taxis and trains. You get point-to-point travel like a taxi, but without traffic jams. The system operates 24/7 and pods arrive at each station every 15 to 30 seconds, just like modern metro systems.
Pod taxi systems already work successfully in London’s Heathrow Airport, the UAE, South Korea, and the Netherlands. Now Maharashtra is bringing this technology to India for the first time.
Where Will Pod Taxis Run in Mumbai?
The first pod taxi network will connect three cities: Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar. The trial route will belong between Bhayander Pada Metro Station in Ghodbunder Road and Vihang Hills Circle in Thane.
This full system will ultimately consist of approximately 52 km, with a total of 63 stations situated throughout the three cities along India. The Guideway System for this trial route will be elevated to a height of approximately 6 m above the level of existing road traffic and thus, as such, the Guideway System will provide a total bypass of any ground traffic that may be occurring at the time.
Additionally, a separate 8.8-kilometer pod taxi corridor is already being developed in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC)—the city’s biggest business hub. This route will connect Bandra railway station, Kurla railway station, and BKC office areas with 38 stations along the way.

When Will Construction Start?
Construction is scheduled to begin between March 2026 and take approximately 2 years and along with it all of the POD Taxi’s based systems as well. The groundbreaking ceremony should happen within six months from now. The BKC project is planned to finish in three years from when it officially starts.
How Much Will Tickets Cost?
Pod taxi fares will be very affordable compared to other transport options. Officials estimate the cost at around ₹21 per kilometer for the BKC route, with the fare increasing by 4 percent annually.
For shorter trips between Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar, the fare will likely be ₹30 for journeys of 1 to 2 kilometers. This pricing was determined by surveying how much people currently pay for auto-rickshaws and buses in these areas.
To put this in perspective, commuters currently pay ₹15 to ₹40 per trip using shared autos or buses. Pod taxis will sit right in the middle, offering a modern alternative at reasonable prices.
Who’s Building This and How Will It Work?
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is managing the project. For the BKC route, Sai Green Mobility partnered with Ultra PRT—the company that runs the famous Heathrow Airport pod taxi system in London—will design and operate the pods.
The entire project follows a public-private partnership (PPP) model. This means the government oversees the planning while private companies handle construction, financing, operations, and maintenance. Best of all, local municipal corporations won’t spend their own money directly on the project.

Why Is Maharashtra Building This Right Now?
Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar have exploded in population recently, but public transport hasn’t kept up. Today, short trips between major spots can take 45 minutes in traffic.
BKC alone sees around 6 lakh people daily and faces terrible congestion during rush hours. Big projects coming soon—including a bullet train station and a new Mumbai High Court building—will bring even more commuters.
Pod taxis will solve this by offering quick, direct routes that skip traffic entirely. They’re also 100 percent electric and produce zero emissions, helping Maharashtra meet its sustainability goals.
What Makes Pod Taxis Better Than Regular Taxis?
The Pod Taxi’s are 100% Automated Vehicles which take away all of the guess work and mistakes associated with human error. POD Taxi’s run on an exact schedule and operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, therefore there are no drivers who receive a paycheck and without a driver, operating costs for the company will remain very low.
The POD Taxi’s also work with existing metro and bus services in Mumbai via a Smartcard connection, thereby requiring no introduction of new systems for the user of the Pod Taxi to transfer between various modes of transportation.
Plus, since everything is electric, pod taxis don’t produce pollution or noise. They’re also safer because they run on separate elevated tracks, away from cars and pedestrians.
What’s the Cost of This Project?
The Thane-Navi Mumbai-Mira-Bhayandar network will cost approximately ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 crore. The BKC project alone costs ₹1,016 crore.
These are large numbers, but the government believes the investment is worth it because pod taxis will handle hundreds of thousands of daily commuters while reducing traffic congestion across the city.
When Can You Actually Use Pod Taxis?
Realistically, the earliest pod taxis could start running is late 2027 or early 2028, after construction and testing are complete. That said, officials are working hard to move the project forward, with the groundbreaking ceremony expected within six months.
For now, this is a game-changing development for Mumbai’s transport future. POD Taxi’s represent the City of Mumbai as the latest to join with cities in London, Seoul, and Abu Dhabi in their implementation of a Next Generation (NGM) transportation system to solve the issues stated above.
