A major breakthrough in a murder case has left the Navi Mumbai community shocked. Uran police have arrested a 49-year-old man for killing his 90-year-old mother-in-law in a brutal attack in Mothe Bhom village. The victim, Hirabai Janardan Joshi, died on November 9 after what her family claimed was a fall. But police discovered a far darker truth.

What Actually Happened
Hirabai was found dead inside her home in Mothe Bhom. Her family told police she had slipped and fallen. This story seemed believable at first. But a closer look revealed something shocking.
Hirabai’s postmortem revealed she had several injuries. There were injuries to the head, forehead, left hand, chest, and nose. The injuries must have been caused by a person hitting Hirabai and not just an accident from falling. At the location where Hirabai died, the police discovered two pieces of wood that had been soaked in blood. This indicates that a person viciously beat Hirabai and then killed her afterwards.
The Real Cause: Money and Jewelry
What sparked the murder was surprisingly simple on the surface. Hirabai had recently purchased a gold necklace and hidden it from her daughters. Her son-in-law, identified as Suresh Savlaram Patil of Chota Bhom village, questioned her about the necklace. This started a heated argument that turned violent.
But the real issue ran much deeper than a gold necklace.
Hirabai had sold four gunthas of land in Taki village and received approximately 15 lakh rupees. She distributed about 5 to 6 lakh rupees among her family members, including her daughters. However, Suresh Patil was frustrated because he believed he deserved a larger share. He wanted money and property that he felt belonged to him.
The argument over the necklace became the breaking point. Years of resentment over property and money exploded into violence. Suresh Patil beat his elderly mother-in-law to death during the confrontation.

How Police Caught the Killer
With the help of a vigilant citizen, however, police were able to solve the case. When Hirabai’s family tried to prepare her for cremation without going through the necessary procedures, a concerned citizen notified the authorities using Emergency Number 112, which proved to be critical to getting justice.
API Swapnil Kedar responded to the emergency call. He noticed that the family had no death certificate for Hirabai. Following standard protocol, he filed an accidental death report and ordered a post-mortem examination.
This ordinary event changed the fate of Hirabai in many ways. The postmortem subsequently disclosed the actual cause of Hirabai’s death – that she did not die from a fall, but was murdered.
Investigation Points to the Suspect
During the investigation, police focused on Suresh Patil. There were many warning signs that led them to believe Suresh was guilty.
Suresh was opposed to doing a postmortem on Hirabai. He vocally and passionately objected to having the procedure done. This suspicious behaviour alerted the police to Suresh Patil. Innocent family members typically do not resist an autopsy.
Second, his statements to police did not match the technical evidence. Police checked his location data from his phone. His movements on the day of the crime did not line up with what he told investigators. The technical evidence contradicted his story completely.
When police presented this technical evidence to Suresh Patil, his lies unraveled. Faced with undeniable proof, he confessed to the murder during interrogation.

Why This Case Matters
This murder case highlights several important issues in our society. Elderly people living alone often become targets for family members seeking money or property. Financial disputes within families can turn deadly without warning.
The case also shows why proper police procedures exist. The emergency call to 112 prevented a potential cover-up. Without that call and the post-mortem examination, Hirabai’s death might have been recorded as accidental. The killer might have walked free.
The case demonstrates how modern police techniques work. Location data and technical evidence helped expose the suspect’s lies. Scientific investigation methods can reveal the truth even when families try to hide it.
Moving Forward
Suresh Patil continues to be in police custody until further questioning and collection of evidence takes place. This murder has been determined as a murder and not an accidental death, and police continue to collect statements from family members and witnesses.
The Navi Mumbai community is outraged by the savage brutality of this murder and the fact that Hirabai’s murder serves to remind the elderly of the possible criminal activity they could experience from their own family members.
